I wasn’t looking for you.
I was looking for a link.
Funny how life has a way of disguising the things we need as the things we think we’re searching for.
I met you and, if I’m being truthful, I thought I had you figured out before I ever gave you the chance to prove me wrong.
You were flirtatious.
Playful.
The kind of man who could make anyone laugh.
I convinced myself you were just another passing face, another story that would begin and end without leaving much behind.
But hearts have never cared much for first impressions.
Because somewhere between the jokes, the conversations, the teasing, and the ordinary moments that quietly became my favorite, I met the man hidden behind the version the world often misunderstands.
A man whose honesty is mistaken for harshness.
A man whose bluntness isn’t meant to wound, but to wake people up.
You don’t tell people what they want to hear.
You tell them what they need to hear.
And maybe that’s why some people misunderstand you.
The truth isn’t always gentle.
Sometimes it asks us to take accountability.
Sometimes it simply says,
“If the shoe fits, wear it.”
I never saw cruelty in your honesty.
I saw care.
I saw someone who believed people were capable of becoming better.
And that’s a rare kind of love, even if the world doesn’t always recognize it as one.
Then there is the side of you I wish everyone could see.
The quiet one.
The goofy one.
The smile that isn’t handed out to everyone, making it all the more beautiful when it appears.
The laugh that escapes before you realize it.
The softness hidden beneath a face that tells strangers nothing about the kindness living underneath.
Sometimes I wonder why you keep so much of yourself hidden.
Then I realize…
Not everyone deserves your energy.
Not everyone earns your peace.
You give pieces of yourself carefully, and somehow I was lucky enough to witness some of them.
I don’t know if you realize how beautiful that is.
Or how easy you’ve made it for someone like me to love someone like you.
Because I do.
I love the way you make me laugh when I least expect it.
I love how safe your presence feels without you ever trying to make it feel that way.
I love that beneath all your confidence is someone who still chooses silence over attention.
I love that you care deeply, even when you pretend not to.
I love the man you are when no one is watching.
And maybe that’s why this love feels so different.
It didn’t arrive all at once.
It arrived quietly.
Like sunrise.
So slowly that I didn’t notice my heart changing until it had already learned the rhythm of your name.
Now I carry all this love with nowhere to place it.
It lives between our jokes.
Between the conversations I replay long after they’ve ended.
Between the messages I reread just to smile.
Sometimes I scroll all the way back to where it began.
One conversation.
One message.
One link.
I still laugh wondering what gave me the courage to speak to you.
Maybe it was your words.
Maybe it was your energy.
Or maybe that Kevin Gates song had already convinced my heart before my mind had the chance to argue.
Whatever it was…
I’m grateful.
Because what started as a simple conversation became one of the most beautiful parts of my life.
You became the missing link.
Not because you completed me—I was never incomplete.
But because you connected pieces of my heart I didn’t know were waiting to be found.
The hardest part isn’t loving you.
Loving you is the easiest thing I’ve ever done.
The hardest part is not knowing if my name ever crosses your heart the way yours never leaves mine.
I wonder if you ever catch yourself smiling at something I said.
If you ever reread our conversations the way I do.
If you’ve ever paused in the middle of your day because something reminded you of me.
Or if this love exists quietly on one side, known only by the heart that carries it.
Maybe I’ll never know.
Maybe one day I will.
But I’ve learned that love doesn’t become less real simply because it’s unanswered.
Real love doesn’t ask for permission to exist.
It simply does.
It waits.
It hopes.
It appreciates.
So even if my heart remains the only place where this love lives, I wouldn’t take it back.
Because loving you has been one of the gentlest things my soul has ever known.
You reminded me that good men still exist beneath misunderstood words.
That softness can live behind strength.
That honesty can be another language for care.
And that sometimes the greatest love stories don’t begin with grand gestures.
Sometimes…
they begin with a missing link.
And somehow,
without either of us knowing,
you became the connection between who I was…
and the woman who learned that loving you felt as natural as breathing.
Whether this story becomes forever,
or remains a beautiful chapter I’ll always carry,
there is one truth that time will never change:
I loved you not for who I hoped you would become,
but for the man you already are.
