The Leaves Wave Hello

Dark, the room is dark

Nothing but stillness and unwavering quietness fill the room.

Thoughts swirling in and out of my mind as I sit here wondering what I want to do.

Should I message them, should I play a game or should I play music and fill the silence.

For once the darkness isn’t terrifying nor is it filled with muffled cries of sadness or loneliness.

The darkness fills the room with wonder , with  uninvited spots of items sitting there waiting for speech.

Outside , you could hear the creeks of the branches back and forth and the soft humming of the wind as the room starts to feel closed in .

From the corner of my bed I peep out the window and see the lamppost light a small tree thin as fall approaches yet the warmth of summer approaches.

The tree is also alone in the dark but the little light helps me see the green leaves swaying. All of a sudden I don’t feel totally alone as when I look at how the wind is blowing through the tree, even through that small hole on the window, even if it’s just a shadow that glows,

The leaves still managed to say hello.

A greeting carried by the wind,

spoken without a mouth,

heard without a sound.

In that fleeting dance of green,

the silence no longer felt empty—

it felt shared.

Perhaps loneliness was never the absence of people,

but the absence of noticing.

Tonight,

the wind noticed me.

The tree noticed me.

And for the first time in a long while,

I smiled back.
